In this post I compare the Concept 2 ergometers. The D model and the E model.

For those who do not know concept 2, the American manufacturer of rowing machines is one of the world leaders in the field of high-end fitness. It is not uncommon to find it in most gyms and in Olympic champions homes, and even if it is pricy, many individuals like you and me acquire it for home use.

Concept2 fully deserves its reputation as its rowers are reliable and efficient and if it can seem expensive, remember that you it will be your first and last purchase. It will follow you throughout your life.

They will also save you the subscription to a fitness club so if you use it, the purchase will pay off very quickly.

Comparing two models from a same brand is always a challenge but these high tech rowers, even if they look alike, have both technical differences and a difference price that deserves our attention.

Of course, you will get the same flat belly, a global work of the muscles: buttocks, shoulders, abs, torso, arms, legs, etc … and cardio but precisely, with so many promises to keep and a prestigious brand, users have the right to ask questions and find answers.

Concept 2 rowing machines

The concept 2 ergometer, whether model D or model E, share a number of characteristics in common:

Concept 2, they are professional rowers as well suited to sports halls as to high level athletes, with an extremely neat and robust design, it will withstand intensive use all your life.

Its chain is nickel plated against corrosion, a drop of oil from time to time is enough to keep it flexible and silent. Its air resistance which is both adjustable and very quiet (quick adjustment to adapt the effort without cooling down).

Concept2 rowers are suitable for both beginners and professionals.

The air resistance also offers great flexibility of work without uncomfortable jerks or risk of injury. The materials used are steel, quality aluminum and ABS.

It folds up to take up minimum space and is equipped with casters to make it easier to move. They are hard to find used.

The PM5 monitor (the latest to date) designed by Concept 2 is simple and efficient, it gives you access to all the useful data, allows you to choose a training program but also has a USB connection and can be connected with the optional heart rate monitor.

It should be noted that most current wifi belts are compatible, so it will not be difficult to find the one that suits you the best. I enclose the link of the belt recommended by the manufacturer:

The price of this essential accessory is quite reasonable. In addition, it is not limited to the sole use of the rower but to other sports activities.

Oh yes, I forgot, Concept 2 PM5 rowers are of course adjustable (handles, toe clips) to adapt to their user… and comfortable.

Before getting started …

I will discuss the fundamental differences between the D model and the E model.

  • For the record, the Model A was the first Concept2. It was produced from 1981 to 1986.

Ergometer Models D and E

  • The model B from 1986 to 1993. It was already a beautiful device.

Ergometer Models D and E

  • The Concept 2 model C from 1993 to 2003. This is the model that made the Concept 2 brand popular.

Ergometer Models D and E

Concept 2 models A, B and C are no longer available for sale.

Produced since 2003, the Concept 2 Model D rower has undergone some modifications to the rail, footrests and air resistance mechanism.

The Model D is the best-selling rower in the world and a bestseller in Europe too. It is in the top 20 of the best-selling rowers to individuals on Amazon.

It folds up for easy storage and movement. It requires an area of 110 x 50 inches. Its dimensions in use are 96 x 24 inches. The seat height is 13,7 inches from the ground and the monorail is 54 inches for a total weight of 57 lbs.

Concept 2 model D costs the equivalent price of around 2 years of gym membership. Model D is available in gray or black.

Produced since 2006, the Concept 2 Model E is the little brother of the Model D (although it is larger in size).

I don’t need to mention again all of the characteristics but it incorporates most of the qualities of the D model, the same PM5 screen and the same dimensions on the ground.

Its main difference is a higher seat (19,7 inches) for better performance and even more comfort. People with knee problems or mobility issues will appreciate not bending down.

The chain requires very little maintenance and the frame is machined to limit scratches. Its frame is reinforced and the weight goes from 57 to 64 lbs. Folded, it measures 26 x 47 x 54 inches. The PM5 monitor arm is also foldable

The Concept 2 Model E is clearly designed to last even longer. More than top of the range, it is a luxury rower recognized in the world of indoor rowing. The E model is available in gray or black.

Features

  • same brand Concept 2
  • same air resistance (same noise)
  • PM5 screen
  • professional indoor rowers
  • same dimensions on the ground
  • foldable rowers
  • same handles
  • 485 lbs capacity
  • 5-year framework warranty; 2 years parts

Differences beetween the 2 rowers

Concept 2 Modèle D

Concept 2 Model D Indoor Rower with PM5 Monitor, Grey
  • 96 x 24 inches (L x w)
  • Poids: 57 lbs
  • seat height 13,7 inches from the ground
  • matt frame
  • short and removable PM5 arm
  • Standard steel chain

Concept 2 Modèle E

Concept2 Model E Indoor Rower with PM5 - Grey
  • 96 x 24 inches (L x w)
  • Poids: 64 lbs
  • seat height 19,7 inches from the ground
  • shiny frame
  • Long and fixed PM5 arm
  • Plated nickel chain

The differences between these two models or rather the fundamental difference is essentially based on a higher seat for the E model which makes it bigger.
But that’s not just a difference in size, it guarantees better stability which allows it to be used to its full potential.

The E model also has an adjustable arm for the PM5 which allows you to position it for the comfort of readability but also to fold it up when storing and thus save significant space since we are talking about 6 inches here. .

The good
  • Very high-end rowing machines
  • Full body cardio workout
  • Alient Comfort and performance
  • suitable for beginners and high level athletes
  • Complete PM5 monitor
  • Foldable quickly
The bad
  • The space required for use
  • The size even folded

the good:

We are on the very high end to work the whole body and there cardio in optimal conditions of comfort and performance. Performance, comfort and silence are the key words of these two ergometers appreciated by top athletes.

The monitor is at the top and transmits real data unlike low-end monitors which are more than approximate when they want to work well. Always with a view to serious work aimed at understanding and improving performance, the cardio belt is a real plus. In addition it folds up for storage.

If I had to conclude, I would say that they have only qualities, we are on the top rower, there is nothing to complain about.

The not so good:

You will undoubtedly have noticed the main drawback of these ergometers, which is their size.
They require a floor space of 108 x 48 inches which roughly equates to a double bed.

So of course it folds up and stows away, but you need to have this surface to work.
Athletes who do not have a large living space will therefore have to organize themselves and push the furniture.

Which Concept 2 to choose?

Ergometer Models D and E

Not easy to say because several criteria are taken into account, but without hesitation, I will take the model E.
Why?

Because if I am ready to invest for a model D ergometer then I can afford to add to the end and fall for the model E which is a more recent model, with higher seat (19,7 inches) and a nickel chain which requires less maintenance.

The Concept 2 D PM5 is already perfect but the E achieves the feat of being better even if the exercises remain strictly the same on the 2 rowers.

The 2 E concept is better and above all allows you to reach your limits with its raised seat and better stability. Most casual athletes will not realize it, but there comes a time when we reach our limits, mainly because the device we are working on does not allow us to go further. With an E model, you will never be limited.

Today, you may not imagine yourself reaching this level, but if you work seriously you can surprise yourself and it would be a shame to be frustrated .

The price difference, if we take this information into account is quite reasonable. In addition, the E model is in turn a great success, which regularly leads to stock outs.
If you are not looking to seriously improve yourself but prefer maintenance, know however that the purchase of a concept2 model D will not disappoint us.

Finally

The 2 professional rowers are very strong and designed for regular use. The Concept 2 model D and E ergometers are both sold to sports and health clubs around the world.  They are among the best rowers. This is enough to remove our doubts if there are still any. You choose.

→ Choose the Concept 2 D

→ Choose the Concept 2 E

It is possible to find a Concept2 rower on sale but we did not find one at labofitness . Ditto for a second hand, we found 2 sellers online but one did not respond to our offer and the second asked for 80 dollars for shipping.

As much to have a new ergometer, one avoids at least the hassles of the badly managed expedition with a stranger.
